A trial lawyer since 1992.

Laura Solinger has dedicated her career to fighting for people who have been arrested, prosecuted, and imprisoned — in front of juries, on appeal, and in the years after conviction, when almost no one else is still fighting.

Since 1992, Ms. Solinger has zealously represented thousands of people charged with crimes in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Long Island — homicides, weapons, narcotics, sex offenses, and assaults. She is a tough negotiator as well as a formidable trial attorney, winning not guilty verdicts in most of her trials. Prosecutors know she will try the case, which is often exactly what produces the dismissal or the plea her clients deserve.

A conviction is not always the end of the case. Ms. Solinger litigates direct appeals, CPL Article 440 motions, state and federal habeas corpus petitions, and resentencing applications — and she has freed three men from life sentences. She also brings SORA petitions for downward departure and termination of registration, including the removal of a lifetime registrant from the registry.

Ms. Solinger also brings civil rights lawsuits, including claims of sexual harassment in jail, assault by corrections officers, false arrest and malicious prosecution, winning significant settlements. She serves on the Assigned Counsel Plan (18-B) felony panel in Kings County, representing indigent defendants charged with serious crimes.

Shawn Lawrence celebrating the overturning of his homicide conviction and life sentence and the complete dismissal of the underlying indictment. After winning the appeal and getting the case completely dismissed, Ms. Solinger then brought a federal lawsuit against Suffolk County for Mr. Lawrence’s wrongful conviction, reaching a very favorable out-of-court settlement.

Gregory Jackson, left, at his new job in 2026, after Ms. Solinger got his 45 years-to-life sentence reduced to 25 years-to-life, resulting in his release.

Kings County, September 2022: a 35-count indictment charging rape and kidnapping, dismissed in its entirety before trial, after a year of defense investigation and advocacy.

Kings County, 2025: gang assault in the first degree, dismissed in its entirety after defense analysis of the prosecution’s own video proved a misidentification — the clothing and the man were similar, but it was not him.

Kings County, 2026: firearm charges dismissed in their entirety after a suppression hearing.

Lucente v. County of Suffolk, 980 F.3d 284 (2d Cir. 2020): on behalf of women sexually abused by a sergeant at the Riverhead jail, Ms. Solinger and co-counsel won a published Second Circuit decision reviving their civil rights claims against Suffolk County. The case then settled.

Dear Laura,
I am in receipt of your traverse, what a perfect job you did! Our main arguments were made stronger, and the counter-arguments were a stroke of genius! I was smiling the whole time as I read it. There was not a dry or weak spot anywhere. You knocked the ball out of the park! Thank you again. I know I thank you all the time, and you must know my gratitude is sincere, but I can’t thank you enough for dedicating your time, energy and expertise to my case. You are truly a godsend.
Sincerely, George McGuire

Dear Ms. Solinger,
. . .I just wanted you to know that you are the one I consider brave and good. People say a lot of things about lawyers that they don’t care and all they do is chase money. But you prove those sayings to be nothing but myths. I pray that you never change the person you are and you remain a champion of justice . . . It was a pleasure to have known you.
Respectfully, Craig T.

Dear Laura,
I want to thank you sincerely from the bottom of my heart for all your time and work that you put in to my case and you should be proud of the talent that you have. Thank you Laura!
Sincerely, Jimmy

Dear Laura,
Thank God for you. I truly believe my husband would still be in jail if it were not for you. We went through so many attorneys and challenges and was finally blessed to have you on his case. You heard us out when no one else would and left no stone unturned. And with all the hard work and dedication you put in, you were able to bring him home. You were not afraid to stand up for the misjustices of the case no matter what the outcome was. You are more than just a lawyer to your clients because you show compassion and dedication in your representation and beyond. You truly care about True Justice and there are a lot of lawyers that could learn from you. Your cases are not just another case to you, you take your time to see the issues and execute them to the fullest. God truly does put good people in your path for a reason. You gave us hope when there looked like there was no hope and you never gave up. You will be forever blessed for the person you are. I do not think I will ever be able to express my gratitude and love for you!

I literally cannot say enough good things about Ms. Solinger. I chose her to represent me not only because of her years of experience and professionalism, but, more importantly, she counsels with heart. As I have never found myself in trouble with the law, when I was looking for legal representation she was the only person who spoke to me as a person rather than a number. Ms. Solinger helped me not have a criminal record. Even after my case ended, I was still able to call upon her with follow up questions and guidance. I am eternally grateful for everything she’s done for me. I highly recommend Ms. Solinger to anyone in need of an accomplished and caring attorney. Mr. F.
